FROM AN ACTUAL LESSON

What makes an autoflower?

Autoflowers begin flowering with age, without waiting for a change in day length.

The short cycle

Autoflower genetics trace to Cannabis ruderalis. Breeders combined its age-triggered flowering with traits from other cannabis lines. A fast cycle and compact growth are common, but each cultivar and environment can behave differently.

Make a record worth comparing

A baseline connects a plant’s response to the conditions around it.

Choose repeatable observations

Record cultivar and seed lot, emergence date, medium, container, light schedule, temperature, humidity, watering, feeding, and notable changes. Add same-angle photos with a scale or recognizable reference. Record what you actually saw rather than diagnosing in the moment.

Start with a decision-worthy question

A useful trial asks what you might do differently next time.

Name the outcome

Choose an outcome you can observe consistently, such as canopy uniformity, days to visible flower, or post harvest quality notes. Define how and when you will record it. Yield alone rarely captures the full result.

Name the trait and how you will score it

A clear goal gives every later observation a purpose.

Choose a measurable outcome

Describe the trait, the conditions in which it matters, and a repeatable observation method. Vigor, color, yield, flavor, flower density, internodal spacing, and days to visible flower are different kinds of evidence. Record units, dates, and rating rules before you select plants.

Genotype, phenotype, and your breeding goal

Separate what you observe from what you can infer about inheritance.

Learn and apply

I begin with a goal I can describe and measure. Genotype means genetic makeup; phenotype is the observed outcome of that makeup interacting with development and environment. A photograph shows a phenotype, not the full genotype. Two plants can look similar yet carry different alleles. One genotype can also produce different observations under different conditions.
